CSI STREET CAMERA INITIATIVE:
We have a proven concept that works in Pretoria East. We have just over 580 cameras that are already installed in the streets of the old east of Pretoria. The project started several years ago with implementation in certain areas with extreme crime rates and violent crime stats.
Within weeks of implementation, crime ceased and there hasn’t been serious crime in the area since, with single isolated incidents over the years.
Other areas such as Newlands, Menlo Park, Lynnwood, Alphen park, Ashley gardens, Unisa and many more, joined in on the initiative and we have acquired a full scale cctv network throughout our areas. The same concepts of outer perimeter security strengthening our ability to catch criminals.
Making good use of data deluge
There is a web of cameras capturing valuable security footage across crucial geographic locations. There is a need for specialized software based on the latest technologies to work on this massive data and create security alerts based on a thorough analysis although several suppliers have implemented software for above mentioned applications to flag vehicles and people that have criminal records on the national database. This also enables security officers to interpret big data in a qualitative manner and allow us to take crucial steps to protect both humans and valuable assets
Image processing allows for better analysis
While there is the facility to capture high-res images using ultra high-definition cameras, their usage as part of video surveillance solutions remains low. As a result, most images captured by such solutions are of poor quality, especially during low light conditions.
